Fanakalo is a language that has been used for decades in the South African mining industry. With its origins in the sugar cane industry, the language was developed as a way for people with different first languages to communicate more effectively with one another.
Over the last two decades or so, the use of Fanakalo in the South African mining industry has reduced but is still the language of choice in most of the underground gold and platinum mines in the country.
