This case study explores the transformative impact of integrating human-centered design (HCD) principles into open pit mining operations, with a focus on significantly enhancing both safety and efficiency. By placing the needs and experiences of operators, technicians, and managerial staff at the core of technological and operational improvements, we address the nuanced challenges inherent in the mining industry. Our approach involved a comprehensive discovery phase to understand the ecosystem, followed by the co-creation of intuitive, user-friendly solutions through participatory design and iterative prototyping. The outcomes include a marked reduction in training times and costs, streamlined decision-making processes, and improved operational safety and productivity, demonstrating the potential of HCD to revolutionize industry practices by prioritizing human needs and insights.
