The Detour Lake, located in northeastern Ontario, Canada, contains estimated gold reserves of 20.7 million ounces. It is situated in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, with a projected mine life of 28 years.
This is an open-pit mine that plans to increase its gold production from 690,000 ounces per year in 2023 to 740,000 ounces per year in 2025. Extensive supracrustal rocks composed of mafic and ultramafic lithologies extend over more than 30 km across the property, containing two recognized episodes of gold mineralization.
Initially operated by Detour Gold Corporation, then by Kirkland Lake Gold, the mine was acquired by Agnico Eagle Mines Limited during the merger with Kirkland in 2022. Haul trucks, electric cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, drills, and various auxiliary equipment are currently in use. Studies on trolley-assisted haulage are underway.
