Rio Tinto obtained an exploration license in 1997 in the Simandou mountains, in southeastern Guinea. Since then, the company has had six CEOs, lost half of the license, fought lengthy legal battles with several rival companies, settled corruption allegations with U.S. authorities and even sought to withdraw from the project altogether.
This time, Rio Tinto’s Chinese partners will obtain approval from Beijing, allowing the start of the project, one of the most complex in its history.
