The Gevra is old of over 40 years (the operations started in 1981) and is located at Central part of the Korba coalfields in Chhattisgarh. This open cast mine is owned by Southeastern Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of coal India.
The total area covered by the mine is about 19.03 sq.km and it has approximately 10 km length and 4 km width. Thus, it is by far the largest coal operation in the country.
Currently, Gevra’s production capacity stands at 52.5 million tonnes a year, making it the largest in India. The expansion aligns with India’s aim of achieving self-sufficiency in coal production and phasing out imports for power generation by the fiscal year 2025-26 (FY26).
The Gevra, at SECL gets green nod for 70 MT annual production.
